The U 47 fet uses the same K 47 large diaphragm condenser capsule and grille design as its tube predecessor, the legendary U 47, which revolutionized the recording and audio industries. from broadcast from 1949 to 1960. For sound continuity, the U 47 fet also uses an equally oversized output transformer. Otherwise, its solid-state preamp is an advanced design and a testament to Neumann’s cutting-edge engineering. This “vintage” microphone has a dynamic range of 119 dB!
The U 47 fet can handle extreme SPLs of up to 137 dB, and even 147 dB with the –10 dB pad switch enabled. This, coupled with its smooth highs and lush mids, makes the U 47 fet an excellent microphone for bright, loud instruments such as brass and electric guitar. Due to its exceptionally clear and uncluttered bass, it is an excellent choice for double basses and bass cabinets. Many top engineers consider the U 47 fet to be the ultimate microphone to place in front of the kick drum. At the same time, it's a great vocal mic for crooners and screamers, due to its beautifully balanced response with just a slight, unobtrusive boost in the upper mids for built-up presence in the mix.
The U 47 leg comes with a unique single-sided swivel bracket, making it easy to position. The Pad and Low Cut switches are accessible on the back of the microphone. An additional switch on the side of the XLR jack allows the output signal to be attenuated by 6 dB, which is a handy feature in conjunction with low-headroom vintage preamplifiers.
