The tsar of microphones The classic 017 sound was considered impossible to achieve with new pickups. Engineers routinely spent small fortunes on vintage condensers and struggled to keep them operational as they aged, as newer models – and even reissues – were often not imbued with the same necessary features despite their high price tag. It's not surprising: manufacturing techniques have changed, why not the results? With its open top end, smooth midrange, powerful – yet balanced – low end, and remarkably robust build quality, the 017 is destined to be the future benchmark for that elusive blend of precision and sonic flattery that sent vintage prices.
