Essential Information About the API 500 DerrEsser Module
Essential Information About the API 500 DerrEsser Module
- Musical dynamic filtering based on an active crossover filter, designed to attenuate harsh high frequencies without dulling the body of the signal.
- Two-band architecture (low and high frequencies) allowing precise control of sibilance, overly bright attacks, and "harshness" in the upper spectrum.
- Modern VCA selected for ultra-low noise and distortion operation, with time constants optimized to remain natural.
- Four operating modes (DS, HF LIMIT, HIGHPASS, LOWPASS) to go well beyond classic de-essing.

An Empirical Labs Processor Designed to Go Beyond Simple De-Essing
The DerrEsser is presented as a dynamic filtering processor in the API 500 format, built around a simple yet highly effective concept: split the spectrum into two bands via an active filter, then apply controlled attenuation to the high band using a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier). While many de-essers limit themselves to chasing "S" sounds at the cost of dulling the upper spectrum, the DerrEsser aims for an extremely musical reduction, preserving useful energy, clarity, and presence when justified.
Its uniqueness also lies in its versatility: depending on the selected mode, it can function as an intelligent de-esser, a high-frequency compressor/limiter, or as a filtering and targeted listening tool (LISTEN function) to isolate and precisely work on the relevant spectral areas.
Who Should Use the DerrEsser and When?
The DerrEsser is aimed at sound engineers, producers, and home studio users equipped with a 500 chassis who seek a quick-to-set-up tool yet refined enough to handle challenging sources. On an overly bright vocal, a take with too much air, or EQ that has added harshness, it allows you to control sibilance without losing diction or intelligibility. It is also relevant on sources rich in transients and harmonics (overheads, hi-hats, acoustics, distorted guitars, synths) whenever the upper spectrum becomes intrusive.
Thanks to its alternative modes, it can also be used as a high-frequency softener (when the goal is not solely to treat "S" sounds), or as an audio filter with controlled slope. In mixing, it becomes an ally to tame aggressive areas without rewriting the EQ; in tracking, it secures a take while maintaining a natural sound; in bus processing, it can help contain unstable brightness that emerges at certain moments.
Modes, Listening, and Dynamics: Surgical Control Without Complexity
DS Mode: An Intelligent De-Esser Sensitive to Spectral Content
In DS mode (HF limiter disabled), the Threshold control is used to tame sibilance and harshness. The behavior is sensitive to the ratio between high and low frequencies: the detector circuit compares the HF content to the LF content, and the overall signal level is not the determining factor. As soon as the HF becomes sufficiently dominant, the threshold is exceeded and the module attenuates the band above the cutoff point set by the Frequency control. The result is processing that targets the problem only when it appears, rather than constant reduction that darkens the source.
HF LIMIT Mode: Gently Limiting/Compressing the High Spectrum
The HF LIMIT mode analyzes only the overall level of the high frequencies, similar to a high-frequency-oriented compressor. When the highs exceed the threshold, gain is reduced. This mode is more level-dependent and particularly sensitive to high frequencies: ideal for softening an overly sharp brightness, smoothing piercing cymbals, or taming aggressive attacks while preserving the low-mid intact. The behavior is described as a Soft Knee HF limiter, designed to remain gradual and musical.
LISTEN Function and HIGHPASS / LOWPASS Modes: Filter and Hear What You Are Processing
Beyond Bypass, the button logic allows access to listening and filtering modes. Using LISTEN, the DerrEsser becomes a very practical working tool: you can isolate what the dynamic section is detecting and processing, to adjust faster and more accurately.
HIGHPASS (Bypass button pressed, Listen button pressed, HP/LP button released, regardless of HF LIM button position): you hear the high frequencies processed by the dynamic/compression circuits. The cutoff frequency is adjusted by the Frequency knob. Once LISTEN is activated, all LEDs on the level meter should light up.
LOWPASS (Bypass activated, Listen activated, HP/LP activated, regardless of HF LIM button position): you hear the low frequencies, those not affected by the VCA and dynamic/compression circuits. The filter offers a 12 dB per octave slope, with an adjustable cutoff frequency via the Frequency knob, useful for verifying what you leave intact and adjusting the overall balance.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Empirical Labs DerrEsser compatible with an API 500 rack?
This processor adopts the API 500 format and therefore requires a compatible chassis for installation and power.
How does the DS mode process vocal sibilance?
In DS mode, detection compares high-frequency content to low-frequency content without relying mainly on overall level. The Threshold triggers attenuation when highs become dominant. The Frequency sets the point above which the high band is reduced.
What is the purpose of the HF LIMIT mode?
HF LIMIT mode analyzes the overall high-frequency level and applies a progressive Soft Knee gain reduction. It controls harsh cymbals or aggressive transients without affecting the low-midrange.
Is it possible to precisely listen to the processed band?
The LISTEN function isolates the zone analyzed by the dynamics circuits. In HIGHPASS mode, it reproduces the processed highs; all level LEDs light up when LISTEN is activated.
What filter slope does the LOWPASS mode offer?
LOWPASS mode applies a 12 dB per octave slope, with a cutoff frequency adjustable by the Frequency knob. It outputs the low band unaffected by the VCA and dynamic compression.
